Schley
This unincorporated community in Orange County is pronounced as SLY. It sits at 587 feet above sea level, northeast of Hillsborough.
Saxapahaw
This mill town on the banks of the Haw River is pronounced as SAX-uh-pa-HAW. With a current population of 1,418, this town was settled by the Quakers.
Icard
This Burke County community is pronounced as EYE-kurd. It has a population of 2,734 and is near Rhodhiss and Hickory.
Glen Alpine
This town of 1,090 near Lake James is pronounced as Glen AL-pun. It lies in Burke County, near Morganton.
Leicester
Originally named Turkey Creek, this town of 12,500 is pronounced as LES-ter. It lies near Asheville in Buncombe County.
