Downtown Raleigh will keep an icon of its black heritage.

The city council wants to keep the walls of the Pope House strong, voting Tuesday to help restore the house and keep it from being moved.

City Council members hope it will help build up the city's black history tourist sites.

The Pope House was home to M.T. Pope, a well-known African-American doctor, in the early 1900s.
