Many Hope To Take Advantage Of Tax Break While Helping Others

At the end of the year, everyone is looking for a break such as a tax break. One good way to squeeze under the wire and get some tax relief is an 11th-hour donation to your favorite charity.

Officials said 23 Goodwills in eastern North Carolina have been jammed Monday with donors trying to take advantage of a last-minute tax break. Goodwill officials said they get most of their donations between Christmas and New Year's.

Donors said the tax break is not the only reason they crowd this door at the end of December.

"I've been doing this all year, but I cleaned out today and wanted to get it in," said one donor.

"It's a beautiful day to clean out the garage and come on down here, plus you're helping people. I have had a better year than most, so I wanted to help folks," donor Greg Deener said.

People still have until the end of the day Tuesday to make a charitable donation that counts toward this year's tax bill. Goodwills in the Triangle area will be open until 6 p.m. Cash donations to charities through the mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 31.
