Six Durham Teens Arrested In Connection To Multiple Crimes

Durham police investigators have arrested six teenagers on charges of robbery, kidnapping and burglary in connection with a carjacking and a home invasion that happened in September.

The teens are suspects in several other robberies in the West End neighborhood.

The teens are charged with stealing a woman's car at gunpoint Sept. 20 on House Avenue.

The victim told police that seven young boys wearing ski masks approached her and asked her for money at gunpoint. They then forced her out of her Nissan Pathfinder and fled in the Pathfinder.

The suspects are also charged in connection with an armed home invasion Sept. 27 on Lafayette Street. The victims said they were outside on the porch when seven or eight teens approached them and demanded money at gunpoint.

The teens reportedly forced the victims into the house, where a struggle took place. Three victims sustained minor injuries during the struggle.

Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit and the Gang Resistance Unit developed information about these cases earlier this week and arrested all six teens within 48 hours.

Four of the six teens are juveniles, ranging from 13 to 15 years old. They have been placed in the Durham County Youth Home on Broad Street.

Investigators charged Walter "Dirty" Chavis IV, 17, of Weldon Terrace and Cleveland "Psycho" Edwards, 17, address unknown, with four counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree burglary and three counts of kidnapping.

Violent Crimes Unit investigators are reviewing open and inactive robbery cases in the West End area to determine if further charges will be filed.
