A Chatham County woman and her friend are in jail, charged with murdering her step-grandfather.

Teresa Mote and her friend, Jason Cade, are facing murder and robbery charges in the death of 62-year-old David Stout. Investigators said Mote asked Stout to go fishing and then beat him to death with a baseball bat. The two suspects then allegedly dumped Stout's body along a rural road near his home.

"We knew that Teresa probably was the last one to see the victim, possibly not probably. We hadn't had a place to start and that's where we started," said Det. Terry McDowell, of the Chatham Co. Sheriff's Office.

Both are being held in the Chatham County jail awaiting a Sept. 30 court date, Mote with no bail, and Cade under $800,000 secured bail.

Mote and Cade are in the Chatham County Jail under $800,000 bond.
