Nellie Wood, 85, thought she was safe in her Grays Creek's home. Family and friends were always checking on her, but that was not enough to prevent a violent attack in her home.

"Her daughter came over to check on her and found her on the floor of her bedroom. She was covered with blood and severely injured," said Lt. Sam Pennica, of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say Wood was stabbed several times and the motive was robbery. They say the thief entered the house by breaking a piece of glass out of the front door.

Muriel Harris, Wood's home aide and friend, said she was always worried about the elderly woman's safety.

"When I started working here, I was concerned because I thought the doors weren't secure, but she told me everything was OK and fine. Everyone loved her," she said.

Investigators say Wood's home was broken into before, but she was not there at the time. Wood is listed in stable condition at the hospital.

Authorities say they are looking for suspects.
