The city of Durham has narrowed its choices for a new police chief.
The three remaining names on the short list include:
William Carcara, chief of the Jefferson County (Ky.) Police Department. He is chief of the county police in the Louisville area. In August 2001, he was a finalist to become chief of the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., police department.Durham interim chief Steve Chalmers, a Durham native and 28-year Durham police veteran. A graduate of N.C. A&T University and Hillside High School, Chalmers joined Durham's police department in 1975 and rose through the ranks from a public safety officer to being named one of two lieutenant colonels last September. As a lieutenant colonel, he was chief of staff and handled top-level administrative duties for the department. He began as interim chief in February.Greg Watkins, deputy chief of the Kansas City (Mo.) Police Department. He recently retired as deputy chief of the Kansas City Police Department after 30 years with the force. He most recently headed the department's patrol bureau.Durham is trying to replace Teresa Chambers, who resigned early this year to become chief of the U.S. Park Police in Washington, D.C.
