Students in the

Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System

will return to classes next fall with fewer teachers.

Monday night, the school board approved a budget that slashes 23 teachers and 48 teacher assistants from the payroll. The effort saves the district nearly $2 million, but could result in larger class sizes.

The budget also requires an increase from both Nash and Edgecombe counties totaling nearly $500,000.

The budget director said no current teachers will be laid off. The district expects to eliminate the teacher jobs through attrition.
