Radio Station To Broadcast WRAL's 6:00 News In Spanish

Beginning next week, WRAL's 6:00 News will team up with the Rocky Mount station, WEED-AM, for daily local news in Spanish.

"News is important, so when we found out that WRAL was providing a Hispanic newscast, we thought, 'Hey, why don't we partner with them and provide it on our radio station WEED-AM?'" said Chuck Johnson, vice president of North Star Broadcasting.

WEED-AM is one of the oldest radio stations in North Carolina. It went on the air in the 1940s. The station had been on Sunset Avenue until 1999 when Hurricane Floyd ruined the building. Today, the station is downtown in the same building as its sister station "Soul 92."

"This is the urban format or the black format 30 years ago. It's a brand-new community, a brand-new format for eastern North Carolina and really for this part of the United States," Johnson said.

WEED-AM or "La Pantera," started as a four-hour show in 1994. The response was so positive that the station broadcasts in Spanish 24 hours a day. You can tune in and listen at 1390 AM.
