Senator cited for speeding, complains about delay

A state senator who was ticketed last month for speeding said Wednesday that his only concern about the incident was the length of time it took to issue the citation.

Sen. Don Davis, D-Greene, was stopped at a traffic March 31 checkpoint on U.S. Highway 264 near N.C. Highway 39. He was cited for driving 84 mph in a 70-mph zone.

Davis issued a statement Wednesday saying that he was on his way to a legislative committee meeting when he was pulled over. He expressed frustration with the amount of time officers took before giving him his ticket so he could continue on his way.

"I do not believe that legislators are above the law or should be exempt from speeding laws," he said. "I have a great deal of respect for our law enforcement community and believe that it is important for everyone, including myself, to obey the law.

"I plan to pay this citation and have never had plans of introducing legislation to exempt lawmakers from speeding laws," he said.
