Apex officers honored for response to shooting

The officers who responded to a May 30 shooting at the Super Target were among the honorees at the annual Apex Police Department Awards Ceremony held June 16.

Officer Charles Jones, Officer Lindsey Tote and Officer Josh MacMonagle were awarded the Apex Police Department's Medal of Valor.

The police officers who responded to a May 30 shooting at the Super Target were among the honorees at the annual Apex Police Department Awards Ceremony held June 16.

Cpl. Michael Prince, and officers Dan Kotlarek, Greg Bennett, Matt Hunter and Chris Myers were recognized for their response to the incident in which a man entered the store and shot a cashier before turning the gun on himself.

Officer Lindsey Tote, Officer Josh MacMonagle and Officer Charles Jones were awarded the department's Medal of Valor for confronting the gunman, Mervin Carroll Mims, without regard to their own personal safety.

Beverly Beacham, of the 911 center, and Capt. Ricky Martin, of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, were also given awards for their roles in the response.

In addition to the awards, the department added two new officers -- Steven Clayton and Thomas Caloggero -- and promoted three.

Officer Steven Duckworth was promoted to corporal; Cpl. Kevin Herring was promoted to sergeant; and Sergeant C. Blair Myhand was promoted to captain, where he will command the department's Investigative Division.
