Memorial planned for NCSU poli-sci prof

Abraham Holtzman taught at North Carolina State University for more than 45 years. He died Monday.

A memorial service was planned Wednesday for Abraham Holtzman, a former professor at North Carolina State University.

Holtzman died Monday. A graveside service was held on Tuesday at the Hebrew Cemetery in Raleigh; a memorial was planned at Temple Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Road, Wednesday at 1 p.m.

In a 45-year career in political science at State, he researched issues as diverse as old-age politics, interest groups and lobbying, political parties and the relationship between the president and Congress. He was a winner of the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member by the university.

Holtzman, who was born in Detroit in 1921, earned bachlor’s and master’s degrees from UCLA and a master’s degree and doctorate from from Harvard.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sylvia Hochfield Holtzman; three sons, Joshua and wife, Janet of Garner, Adam and wife, Maria of Raleigh, and Seth and wife, Lisa of Salisbury; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Naomi Golding and husband, Martin of Durham.
