Cary Public Works Director Mike Bajorek has been named the town's assistant manager, beginning July 27.

Bajorek replaces Ben Shivar, who became town manager in March after serving as assistant town manager for 13 years.

Bajorek, 50, was selected from a pool of 126 applicants from 22 states. He previously served as assistant director of public works from 1988 to 1996 and has served as public works director for the past 13 years.

“In addition to his outstanding skills and abilities, Mike’s strong commitment to Cary and the respect others have for him made him the ideal candidate for the position, and I very much appreciate his willingness to serve the organization and our community in this new and challenging capacity,” Shivar said in a statement.

In his new role, Bajorek will focus on day-to-day municipal operations. He will also be involved in developing and carrying out Cary’s operating budget and business plans.

Bajorek has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute and a master's degree in business management from Central Michigan University. He also is a graduate of the Municipal and County Administration Course from the School of Government at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
