Durham installs dozens of bike racks

City crews recently finished installing 67 bike racks throughout the city as part of Durham's CityRacks Bicycle Parking Program.

"This is an important step in the city’s efforts to become a more bicycle-friendly community, and we’re going to continue our progress by installing more racks and lockers at both our public schools and the new Durham Station in the coming year," Dale McKeel, bicycle and pedestrian coordinator with the Transportation Division of Durham’s Department of Public Works, said in a statement.

Eighty percent of the $10,200 cost for the bike racks was provided by federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds, while the city picked up the rest of the cost, McKeel said.

A map and a list of bike rack locations are on the city's Web site, and people can also request racks for other locations as the city expands the program.
