Another section of the Apex Peakway opened to traffic Thursday.

The half-mile section takes Apex Peakway to North Salem Street north of downtown. It cost $3.6 million and took 13 months to complete and includes a bridge over a CSX Railroad line.

"Completing this portion was a great leap on the part of the town to finance and construct. This addition will add great value to Apex citizens and visitors as a way to navigate around town," Town Manager Bruce Radford said in a statement.

The town will soon begin construction of an 1,100-foot section of Apex Peakway between Laura Duncan and Old Raleigh roads, with plans to open it to traffic next spring.

The only two remaining gaps in the Apex Peakway loop will then be between Tingen Road and Old U.S. Highway 1 and between N.C. Highway 55 and Center Street. Officials said those sections will be constructed as development occurs in those areas or as future town projects.
