As a first-time mom, there are many things I would do differently in those few months before and after my baby was born, but there are also things I did well for my first time!

Here are some things I quickly figured out were good moves.

Ask you shower guests or host to have people bring you books instead of cards. Some books are cheaper than greeting cards (and hand-me-downs are free). We got some many special books with sweet messages from family and friends. You can also enroll in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which mails free books to children from birth until they begin school.

Likewise, suggest a diaper raffle, where guests bring a package of diapers to be entered into a prize drawing. It was so nice to have packs of diapers ready so we didn't have to order them those first months.

Register for practical items you really need. I didn't register for outfits or toys, knowing I would get some or buy them myself later. I am so glad I asked for a Pack N Play, travel system and several bath and bed essentials.

Never say no to baby clothes. When people asked if I wanted their baby clothes, I graciously accepted. I've stayed organized by sorting the clothes by size and storing them in vacuum-sealed bags for when my sweet girl gets older. I look forward to passing them on again one day!

Consider the future when registering for and buying baby gear, whether it's a stroller that can turn into a double or a crib that turns into a toddler bed.

When people want to help, ask for meals so you don’t overdo it with takeout. Obviously, there was no time to cook during those first months, and ordering out wasn't good for our health or our wallets. When people asked what they could do for me, suggesting they make a casserole or ready-to-cook meal was an inexpensive -- and helpful -- thing they could do.

Check out consignment sales or stores in your area. My mom benefited from this almost more than I did. Before and after my daughter was born, she purchased a Pack N Play, a play mat and a baby lounger/bath seat all for half price.
