People living in Cumberland County are fed up with illegal dumping near their homes.

The county has a solid waste dump on Hummingbird Place, but trash is piling up on the side of the road less than a mile away.

Elizabeth Touchet, who lives nearby, has had enough.

"(I'm) extremely angry and frustrated and disgusted and annoyed," she said.

Touchet lives down the road from all the trash.

"I don't understand how someone could be so lazy. We have a garbage and a dump right there," she said.

The Hummingbird Place Solid Waste Container site is one of 17 operated by Cumberland County.

Lorenzo Houston has been bringing his trash to this site and disposing of it the right way for years.

"Pollution is pollution is pollution, and it doesn't help the environment. It doesn't help anybody, and it's an eyesore," he said.

Phillip McCall blames the dump's odd hours for the problem.

"People are throwing the stuff out because they come by here and the dump is closed," he said. "It has such odd hours that it's hard to keep up with, so they say they're going to take their stuff back home, but they just throw it out on the side of the road."

In inspecting the road with all the trash, officials were able to figure out who some of the stuff belongs to. An official was able to rip open a bag and find a letter with someone's name on it.

"I'm going to send them a solid waste citation," said Kathy Mcvey, Environmental Enforcement Officer. "Let them know that they have some trash that was found on Hummingbird Place and they need to come remove it or they will be charged."

Hours at the facility are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
