Police investigate assault near Wilson hospital

Wilson Medical Center and affiliated facilities were locked down Tuesday afternoon after an assault nearby, police said.

A woman ran to the hospital shortly before 3 p.m. and reported that she had been "assaulted with a firearm" by a man while she was parked in a wooded parking area across Tarboro Street, police said.

Authorities later determined the woman had also been shot during the altercation.

The woman was transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. She was in stable condition Tuesday night.

Keyshane M. Sanders, 28, of 719 Viola Street, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree forcible sex offense in connection with the incident.

Sanders was being held under $500,000 secured bond Tuesday night.

The lockdown was lifted after the arrest, but police continued to block off the parking area, so forensics technicians could examine a green sedan and collect evidence from the area.
