Project proposes new future for I-40 and I-440

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has some good news for drivers in Raleigh.

Projects are set to add one to two lanes in both directions of Interstate 40 between Lake Wheeler Road and U.S. Highway 1.

Crews are also planning to redesign the busy I-40/I-440/U.S. 1/U.S. 64 interchange to better accommodate heavy traffic building in the Triangle.

According to the NCDOT project page, "Reconstruction of this interchange will improve critical traffic operations."

Construction for both projects is set to begin in 2025.

Drivers had to deal with headaches for four years when the NCDOT rebuilt the same section of I-40 as part of the Fortify project several years ago.

The total cost will be $68.8 million.
