NC State's gymnastics team starts up season with free intrasquad meet

These meets offer a lot of great family fun, especially for the bazillion young gymnasts out there. But even my soccer and basketball-loving girls enjoy these events. There is just so much to watch.

UPDATE: Because of the threat of winter weather, this event has been moved from Sunday to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8.

NC State's gymnastics team is revving up for the season, which starts up with a free competition this Sunday.

I've written about these meets before, which provide great family fun, especially for the bazillion young gymnasts out there. But even my soccer and basketball-loving girls enjoy these events. There is just so much to watch.

The season begins with the Red & White Exhibition at 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8. This is an intrasquad competition that will take place at Reynolds Coliseum. Attendance is free for all. There also will be a Toys for Tots toy drive and, after the exhibition, autographs with the full team and a Q&A session with head coach Kim Landrus.

"Our 2019 schedule is packed with great competition across several conferences including the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12," Landrus says in a news release. "This exposure will prepare our team for both our conference championships in March and NCAA postseason in April. Our fans will see some great gymnastics as our home schedule features NCAA Regional competitors Ohio State, George Washington, and Pittsburgh, along with conference rival UNC. Our fans won't want to miss the five opportunities they have to see the 2019 team in action!"

The team's five home meets include one on Jan. 12 against Ohio State when young fans will be encouraged to come out in their Disney best during Disney night. Other meets are slated for Feb. 9 against Pittsburgh; Feb. 16 against UNC-Chapel Hill; Feb. 22 against William & Mary and Western Michigan; and March 9 with Arizona, George Washington and Texas Women's University.
