NC native Ariana DeBose named to 'Time 100' influential list
Time magazine named North Carolina native Ariana DeBose to its annual Top 100 influential people list.
Actress Kristin Chenoweth wrote the submission for DeBose, which the magazine published on Monday.
“Ariana DeBose is what I call a quadruple threat: she’s not only a dancer, an actress, and a singer, but also kind,” Chenoweth wrote. “I first became aware of her when I saw her as the Bullet in ‘Hamilton.’
“The role requires her to move in slow motion—and so creative was she! It took such physical strength.”
Both DeBose and Chenoweth were cast in the TV show “Schmigadoon!”
In March, DeBose won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in Steven Spielberg's “West Side Story” remake. She also won a Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critic's' Choice, and Screen Actors Guild award for the performance.
“As the first openly queer woman of color to win an Oscar for acting, for 'West Side Story,' she’s a trailblazer,” Chenoweth wrote. “I think she’ll one day win an EGOT [an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and a Tony].”
