Data released Monday from the Leapfrog Group ranks how hospitals across North Carolina performed in patient safety on a national report card.

The new data compares more than 30 data points based on each hospital's prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries. According to Leapfrog, these errors kill more than 500 patients every day.

Duke, WakeMed and UNC Rex in Raleigh are among the hospitals that scored As in the newly-released report card.

All three of Duke's hospitals made the "A" list along with WakeMed's main Raleigh campus, WakeMed Cary Hospital and WakeMed North Hospital.

“Our continuous ‘A’ grades from Leapfrog shows our commitment to putting patients first at all three of our hospitals,” said Thomas Owens, M.D., executive vice president and chief operating officer of Duke University Health System. “We want to say thank you to our team members, who are key to providing high quality care.”

“Patients and family are at the center of all we do – and these A grades reflect our team’s commitment to improving quality, patient safety and service,” said Karen Chilton, MD, senior vice president for WakeMed.

According to a spokesperson from UNC Health, Rex is one a handful of hospitals nationwide – and the only hospital in North Carolina – to earn straight “As” since Leapfrog began grading hospitals in 2012.

“Patient safety is always a top priority at all UNC Health hospitals and clinics,” said Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health. “This sort of recognition happens because of our teammates’ unwavering commitment to provide safe and high-quality care for all of our patients.”

This year marks the third consecutive "A" for Maria Parham Health in Henderson, one of our state's small, rural hospitals.

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill scored a B, and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center scored a C.

Granville Health in Oxford is one of only two hospitals in North Carolina that scored a D.
