NC DMV now requiring drivers to confirm appointments; some customers caught off guard

New DMV policy requires customers to confirm appointment

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is working to find solutions for the long-running issue of people not showing up for their scheduled appointments.

The NCDMV is now requiring all new appointments be confirmed before coming into the office.

"This confirmation process is necessary to address the high no-show rate for appointments we have been experiencing in our driver licenses offices," said DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

In the month of February, 33.5% of appointments were no-shows.

Appointments will be reserved online through SkipTheLine.ncdot.gov. Customers will receive a text message and email with a confirmation link to confirm the appointment. The link must be confirmed within 15 minutes or the appointment will be canceled. Once confirmed, customers will received another text and email notification saying that their appointment was confirmed.

Four days before the appointment, customers will receive a reminder text and email with another confirmation link. Within 24 hours, customers must confirm their appointment again. For appointments booked less than four days out, no second confirmation link will be sent.

“Folks are used to having to confirm their medical and other appointments in this way, so we’re applying this standard from the private sector to our business model and expecting good results and increased appointment availability," Goodwin explained.

This latest improvement comes on the heels of the DMV Express self-service kiosk pilot that launched two weeks ago and other additions, including adding more online services and the Walk-In Wait Time Tool.
