National Weather Service confirms EF1 tornado touched down near Wendell
The National Weather Service on Monday night confirmed that a tornado touched down near Wendell when a line of storms moved through Sunday night.
The EF 1 tornado touched down about 5 miles northwest of Wendell, near Hals Farm Road, at about 10:35 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The tornado was on the ground for about a minute.
The storm tracked to the north, damaging trees, a barn and several homes before crossing Sadie Drive, where homes sustained minor damage to siding and roofs, the National Weather Service said.
The tornado also impacted several homes along Woodie Drive, with one sustaining significant damage when a tree fell through the roof.
About two dozen trees were uprooted and an outbuilding was destroyed as a result of the storm, officials said.
Officials said the storm had a top wind speed of 87 mph and a maximum path width of 100 yards.
Another tornado touched down Sunday night in Greensboro, causing damage to homes, churches and schools and killing one person.
