The aviary's lobby is one place to cool off during a summer day at the zoo.

The North Carolina Zoo will close its Forest Aviary for a couple of weeks for routine annual maintenance.

The indoor exhibit features more than 3,000 tropical plants and dozens of exotic birds, including the amethyst starling, the blue-crowned hanging parrot and the Chilean flamingo. In the summer, it's one of my five favorite places at the N.C. Zoo to cool down.

The space will be closed from Jan. 22 to Jan. 26 and Jan. 29 to Feb. 2. It will be open to guests at 9 a.m., Jan. 27 and Jan. 28, for weekend visitors, according to a press release. It will reopen at 9 a.m., Feb. 3.

The N.C. Zoo is in Asheboro about 90 minutes from the Triangle.
