N.C. Museum of History celebrates Hispanic Heritage with free festival

The Ballet Folkloric Guadalupano group brings water from the Gulf of Mexico for the opening of the Nature Research Center at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on April 20, 2012.

The North Carolina Museum of History will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Saturday with a free festival. 

¡Celebración! boasts music and dance performances, cooking demonstrations and hands-on activities. In addition to activities inside the museum, the event will overflow into Bicentennial Plaza, directly in front of the museum.

Some event highlights: 

  • Music from Los Cuñados de Tierra Calienta (Ranchera songs) and Cesar Oviedo’s Latin Rio, featuring Cuban, Brazilian and Spanish tunes
  • Performances by Triangle Tango, the Argentinian Dance Group and Ballet Folklorico Guadalupano
  • Make your own miniature piñata to take home
  • Percussion workshop letting you try your hand at some Latin beats
  • Zumba workshop and Latin Dance Showcase 
  • Sandra Gutierrez, author of the cookbook The New Southern-Latino Table, will prepare dishes that blend ingredients, traditions and culinary techniques of Latin America and the American South. Watch the demo and taste some samples
  • Local art on display
  • The museum’s first bilingual exhibit, Al Norte al Norte: Latino Life in North Carolina, which focuses on the history of experiences of Latinos in North Carolina, will be on display. It features images by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer José Galvez
