Mural defaced near Shaw University

Students at Shaw University are calling for immediate action after a mural near the campus was defaced with racist graffiti.

The mural, created by Muslimah Shareef, was painted in the wake of police shootings and protests last summer. The graffiti shows a map of the U.S. with the words "Not Stolen. Conquered," and the name of a white supremacist group, the Patriot Front.

Shaw students said they want to see the city and university do something about the graffiti.

"Why now? We just had our homecoming, and everybody was having a happy celebration," said Janell Odom, a sophomore. "To just come outside and see this was defaced right outside our campus, it's just, it's really shocking."

A Shaw spokeswoman said, "Though the art at issue is part of a citywide public art project, the university does not condone any acts of vandalism or defacing of property."
