Lightning sparks fire at home on Maynard Road in Cary

Lightning from storms rolling through the Triangle triggered two fires in people's homes around Cary on Saturday.

A home on Maynard Road caught fire when lightning struck the roof.

Officials say that fire was confined to the attic, but the family of four was pushed from their home. The Red Cross is helping them in the meantime.

"You see that big white line on the oak tree?" said Paul Scofield. "That was a lightning strike. And then there was an arc over here, and there's a little hole near my wife's car. The whole left side of her car is filled with debris."

The damage to the home was minimal, and no one was hurt.

Another lightning strike on the same day caused a fire at an apartment complex on Harvest Court Row.

A tenant who lives close to the unit that caught fire says she heard a loud noise and smoke started coming into her apartment.

Officials say the fire started between the first and second floors, and they evacuated the entire building while they worked.

No one was hurt, and tenants were allowed back in a short while later.
