The year 2020 seems like a great year to explore the wild grandeur of North Carolina. We have so much diversity and beauty in the Old North State and the 41 state parks offer a perfect way to enjoy the incredible scenery.

I’d like to hear your recommendations as I embark on this special effort to visit as many of the parks as possible, even the ones I’ve already enjoyed. What are your favorite state parks? I would love to share your stories and comments. My email address is bleslie@wral.com.

Mountain vistas, ocean tides and hiking trails -- how do you choose a favorite state park?

I’ve been thinking about this special park tour ever since I narrated and provided music for the documentary “Here in This Place,” which celebrated the 100th anniversary of state parks in 2016.

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite state park.

I dearly love Stone Mountain near Elkin for its trails, scenic views and camping.

Pettigrew is one of my top coastal destinations with kayaking, canoeing and migratory birds in the winter.

I am really looking forward to visiting one of the newer state parks, Gorges, touted for its “amazing waterfalls and serene hiking trails.”

One of my favorite memories from a state park came shortly after I graduated from UNC. The first date I had with my future wife Cindy was in Umstead State Park in Raleigh.

My father William Leslie, a watercolorist, painted pictures of state parks, including Mount Mitchell.

Ready to embark on a North Carolina journey

Where do I begin this new adventure? It will be hard to choose. We have 34 state parks, four recreation areas and three state natural areas. Again, I encourage you to impact my journey by sharing your own memories, stories and favorite places at bleslie@wral.com.

I can’t wait to get started! There is something special about smelling the fresh air, following the sparkle of the water and listening to the soundtrack of nature.
