Mother dies in car crash after leaving child at Family Dollar

A woman who left her child at a Family Dollar died Thursday after getting into a car accident in Halifax County.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office said that after the child was left behind, the mother was in a "major automobile accident."

The crash happened around 6:19 p.m. on Lonnie B. Greene Road in Roanoke Rapids.

Deputies said the woman was in critical condition when she was taken to the hospital. She eventually died from her injuries.

At this time, authorities do not know why she left her child at the store.

The child is currently safe with family, according to deputies.

No charges are anticipated.
