Grandmother admits twin grandaughters ingested narcotic gummies, sent to the hospital

After 3-year-old twins were sickened by THC gummies, their 24-year-old mother faces criminal charges of misdemeanor child abuse and felony possession of a controlled substance.

According to the warrant for her arrest, Sydney Greysen Stoker had the gummies in her room at 1025 Fair Long Road in Wake Forest where her twins were able to get access to them.

The twins' grandmother was taking the twins to the hospital for treatment when her car broke down on Calvin Jones Highway in Wake Forest Oct. 29 and she called for assistance.

The grandmother told first responders that the children had taken gummies that had THC in them.

“This is an increasing problem we are seeing in health care: young children ingesting THC edibles,” said Dr. Mike Steiner, pediatrician in chief at UNC Children’s Hospital. “This year, 3,000 to 4,000 under the age of 6 will unintentionally ingest THC gummies.”

Steiner added approximately 10% of those children will end up in the ICU with "depressed sensorium."

“The most common [side effect] is [becoming] overly sleepy and hard to wake up,” he explained. “It can be very dangerous and alarming.”
