More than a dozen Clayton businesses caught selling alcohol to minors
The Town of Clayton is cracking down on sales of alcohol to underage buyers after an undercover bust revealed more than a dozen businesses selling alcohol illegally.
Of 29 businesses checked during a recent investigation, 13 sold alcohol to a teenager working with police for the crackdown.
Police Chief C. Blair Myhand said those numbers are unacceptable.
“One of the unfortunate things is, since we’ve been doing these campaigns, we have now purchased alcohol at every off-premise establishment in town by a minor. So, that’s troubling that every single one of our places has sold at least once to us,” he said.
Of the 13 locations where alcohol was sold in violation of the law, some did not check IDs at all.
Four of the clerks actually checked the underage teenager’s identification, which showed his age to be 19, but still sold the alcohol after overriding their computers.
Authorities said that only nine of 27 businesses investigated in a similar bust last year were found selling alcohol to minors.
Clerks at the following stores were cited for selling a malt beverage to a person under age 21:

- Clayton Mart at 208 East Main Street
- Food Lion at 238 Pritchard Road
- Handee Hugo’s at 238 Pritchard Road
- Deep River Brewery at 700 West Main Street
- Walgreens at 11306 U.S. Highway 70 Business West
- ABC Store at 12487 U.S. Highway 70 Business West
- Clayton Beverage at 11679 U.S. Highway 70 Business West
- Speedway at 11693 U.S. Highway 70 Business West
- Sandhu’s at 1225 Amelia Church Road
- Howard’s Mini-Mart at 4222 Barber Mill Road
