More than 820,000 in-person votes already cast in NC

Since early voting began on Thursday, more than 828,000 in-person ballots have been cast at early voting sites, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

In North Carolina, more than 1.7 million votes have already been cast. A little more than 57% of the total votes cast have been at an early voting site, data from the NCSBE shows.

As of Sunday, nearly 20% of North Carolina's 7.2 million registered voters had already cast their ballot. Before early voting began, 11% of registered voters had already cast their vote.

So far Chatham, Durham and Orange county have had some of the highest voter turn out in the state. Nearly 30% of all eligible voters have already cast a ballot in those three counties, data shows.

To date, more than 1.3 million absentee ballots have been requested across the state of North Carolina. Not everyone who casts an absentee ballot will necessarily be sending one in. If a voter requests an absentee ballot and changes their mind, they can still vote in person -- as long as they have not yet mailed in their vote.

A majority of ballots cast early were from registered Democrats, according to elections officials. Seventeen percent of ballots already collected were from registered Republicans, and more than 30 percent were from unaffiliated voters.

During the 2016 election, only 193,667 absentee ballots had been requested during the same time.
