Morning, evening commutes should be quiet, but storms could move in Tuesday night

Showers and scattered storms are expected to move into central North Carolina on Tuesday, but they won’t be as severe as Monday’s thunderstorms.

Winds on Monday toppled 15 to 20 trees on the Dorothea Dix campus in Raleigh, including a massive oak tree that damaged part of a building.

Power lines fell all over in Johnston County, and N.C. Highway 42 was shut down for over an hour because of a tree on live power lines.

But Tuesday morning was clear, with temperatures in the upper 60s.

High humidity could make temperatures feel near 100 degrees in Raleigh by the late afternoon.

A high-pressure system in the Midwest is keeping most of the United States hot, and another high-pressure system off the North Carolina coast is funneling warm, moist air.

Scattered storms will move into North Carolina on Tuesday evening and continue through the night. Southern North Carolina is expected to see the most of the storms.

The chance for thunderstorms increase later this week. Friday has a 60 percent chance of showers and storms.
