Cars broken into again at downtown Raleigh apartment complex

For the second time in a week, cars at a downtown Raleigh apartment complex were broken into overnight.

It's a sight more than a dozen car owners woke up to on Thursday morning. It happened at The Link Apartments in downtown Raleigh

That's just half a mile from the Devon Apartments where on Monday, we reported more than 11 cars had their windows smashed.

The Link is a gated complex, but that didn't stop the cars from being broken into. They are just blocks away with one on Boylan Avenue and The Link located on West Street.

Residents said they felt safer because of the gate, but that didn't keep thieves out last night.

Residents at this downtown apartment building are vacuuming up broken glass. And cleaning out their cars after thieves broke into dozens of cars at the Link Apartment Complex on West Street.

"It was completely shattered," said Madison Malloch.

Malloch left for work at 9:30 a.m., but she didn't get very far.

"Three windows were busted out," Malloch said. "Everything taken, any kind of prescriptions, my AirPods. Even took my pickleball racket."

Most cars broken into were on the lower floor of the parking garage. There was broken glass right next to the cars.

Surprisingly, the thieves seemed to leave some valuables.

"I have a Louis Vuitton wallet and they didn't take the wallet," said Becca Rowan. "They didn't take the credit cards, they just took the cash."

"They didn't really take anything but some of my stuff was thrown around the parking garage," said another woman.

Raleigh police provided 34 police reports to WRAL. They said they do routine patrols of the area by car and foot.

Residents say they thought they were more protected with the gated garage, but this isn't the first break in at the Link.

"We've already had it happen once at our building," Malloch said.

A representative from The Link provided a statement to WRAL News, adding “our residents’ safety and security is of the utmost importance to us, and we share their frustration around this incident. We are fully cooperating with the Raleigh Police Department in their investigation into the car break-ins. We have security cameras on the main parking deck entrances as well as two courtesy officers onsite, and we will continue communicating with residents about any crime information we receive. Our teams are working on additional solutions that we hope will mitigate future incidents of vandalism.”
