An owner surrendered 22 dogs he could no longer care for this week, according to the Moore County Sheriff's Office.

According to officials, a serious illness has required the man to stay in the hospital for an extended period of time. As a result, the man voluntarily surrendered his dogs to the county so they could be adopted out to new homes.

The dogs were in good health when they were collected from the home, officials said.

The Moore County Sheriff's Office reached out to the SPCA of Wake County, TARA (Tilted Acres Rescue & Adoption) and Peak Labs to help adopt out the dogs.

"Only through these accomplished partnerships with rescue groups throughout the state can we successfully find homes for dogs and cats in need of a good home, and we truly appreciate everything these groups do to find loving homes for these animals," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
