Johnston County sheriff's deputies charged an Angier woman with child abuse for allegedly using her 14-year-old son as a designated driver last Thursday afternoon.

Deputies pulled over Angel Gale Montayne, 39, of Massengill Pond Road, after she turned on a dirt path to avoid a checkpoint, said Tammy Amaons, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

When they stopped the car, deputies found her 14-year-old son in the driver's seat, Montayne in the front passenger seat and her 14-year-old stepdaughter in the back seat, Amaons said.

Deputies charged Montayne with two counts of child abuse and impaired supervision of a child. She was released from the Johnston County Jail under a $5,000 bond.
