Mobile Home Fire Kills 1 Outside Chapel Hill

Firefighters inspect the damage to a mobile home outside Chapel Hill after a fire destroyed the residence and killed one person inside.

An unidentified person was killed early Friday in a fire at an Orange County mobile home, authorities said.

A fire was reported around 4:20 a.m. at 8301 Merin Road, northwest of Chapel Hill, Clint Osbourne with Orange County Emergency Medical Services, said. Crews from the Carrboro, Chapel Hill and New Hope fire departments responded.

Firefighters contained the fire within 20 minutes. When they entered the home to check for hot spots, they discovered a body, Osbourne said.

The body has been transported to the state Chief Medical Examiner's Office, and officials are still trying to determine the victim's identity.

Osbourne said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
