Mike Pence speaks in Chapel Hill and answers tough questions

Mike Pence spoke Wednesday in Chapel Hill as part of his "Saving America from the Woke Left" event.

On Wednesday, reporters asked Pence whether he will run for president in 2024.

“I don’t have anything to announce today, but I think this country is in a lot of trouble,” Pence said.

No commitment to a run in 2024  but his supporters were committed on the outside some lining up two hours early to hear from Pence.

He touted his tenure as the vice president with former President Donald Trump during a media briefing with reporters on Wednesday.

“Rebuild our military, revive our economy, unleash American energy,” Pence said. “I see conservatives appointed to our courts at every level and see a level of prosperity in this country the likes of which I’d never seen in my lifetime.”

Pence said he would keep Americans posted on whether he would decide to run. He would be 65 years old on Nov. 5, 2024, which is when the presidential election will be held.

Before Pence's arrival, several organizations and the UNC Young Democrats protested his appearance.

The former vice president began speaking around 7 p.m. The counter protest started at 6 p.m.

"Mike Pence thinks America needs saving from the 'Woke Left.' Wrong. We are a diverse and wide-ranging student coalition that is going to save America from right-wing extremists like Mike Pence," the student coalition said in a news release.

A reporter asked Pence about his response to the counter protests to his Wednesday night speech.

"That's what freedom looks like, isn't it?" Pence said. "And, I hope by my presence here that maybe some come in and listen and give a willing ear to our view about what's made this country exceptional and strong and free."

Pence said he loves a good debate and dialogue.

"I would hope that my presence on this campus and on campuses around the country would help level what has been an imbalance of liberal thinking on many campuses today across the country," Pence said.

Pence commended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"It's been an institution that has respected academic freedom," Pence said.

A man had to be escorted out of the event for his eruption during the question-and-answer portion.

He yelled, “You betrayed Trump.”

When Pence was asked if he would support Trump's reelection, he replied, "It's a free country and the former president is free to run."

The event sponsored by Young America’s Foundation comes just one day after President Joe Biden announced he’s running for reelection.

Pence has not announced he’s running for president. Experts believe the former vice president’s timing shows he’s trying to find out where he can pull supporters.

Pence is no stranger to North Carolina; he was here in November to support Sen. Ted Budd.
