A man faces charges after investigators found drugs and possible explosive devices inside a car in a grocery store parking lot in Washington, North Carolina.

On Wednesday around 6:45 p.m., a deputy with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office saw a man "slumped over" in a car in the parking lot of the Food Lion on John Small Avenue.

When the deputy saw drug paraphernalia in plain sight, he made contact with the man and seized a weapon and crystal methamphetamine. A deeper search of the car revealed what appeared to be possible explosives inside the vehicle, according to investigators.

Deputies secured the parking lot, confiscated the items and closed all local businesses in the Washington Corner shopping center until 1:30 a.m., when the scene was cleared.

Cameron Lee Smith, 40, of Washington, was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed gun.

He was jailed in the Beaufort County Detention Center under no bond

Officials said there is no known threat to the public.
