Meet Ashulyon Feurtado, a mother of two and a community protector at the Maxton Police Department.

What's your name and where are you from?

Ashulyon Feurtado and I’m from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Tell us about you and your family.

I am a mother of two and I recently got engaged to my fiancé, Tevonia. We are raising Liam and Logann. Me and my family love to eat at Cold Stone Creamery and go to the trampoline park afterwards. Our favorite go-to is movie night. We absolutely love a good movie and popcorn. Liam loves to go fishing and Logann loves to play dress up.

What is your current career and what made you choose that path?

I am currently a police officer and I joined this field because I love to help people and give people better opportunities and alternatives when they make bad decisions.

What obstacles do you face being a woman in law enforcement?

Being a woman in law enforcement I have faced the obstacles of being the only woman at a department and having to constantly prove myself, while also being at a diverse department and still having to prove myself. Being a woman in law enforcement is a constant battle of proving that I belong here.

How do you balance your career and motherhood?

Motherhood is my first job and law enforcement is my second one. They go hand and hand because they both make me happy. Before anything, I am a mother and I make sure my family knows that they come first ; I’m only phone call away. I love my career, so going to work is fun for me. I’m a mother first and officer second. Home is a break from work and work is a break from home.

Tell us about some of your hobbies outside of work.

Outside of work I love to find new foods to try and cook for my family. I enjoy going to the hookah lounge and grabbing drinks with my girls. I also like to read new novels and getting my nails done is very therapeutic for me.

What does a relaxing day look like for you?

A bag of hot Cheetos, some apple juice, and my remote. I love to relax and watch law and order to decompression from life.

Do you have any advice for other mothers working in demanding careers?

Give yourself some grace, you are doing the best you can.

What is the one thing you would like to be remembered for?

I would like to be remembered for always doing what everyone said I couldn’t.
