McCrory drops duplicate HB2 lawsuit against feds

Gov. Pat McCrory on Friday dropped one of the state's lawsuit with the federal government over the legality of House Bill 2, leaving untouched a separate and similar contest in a different judicial district.

The now-dropped lawsuit was filed in May by McCrory and Frank Perry, secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, in the Eastern District of North Carolina to determine if HB2 violated federal law. U.S. In response, Attorney General Loretta Lynch filed a similar case in the Middle District of North Carolina.

Friday's notice of dismissal was filed to avoid paying the "substantial costs" of litigating two similar lawsuits in two judicial districts.
