Rocky Mount police arrested a man and woman on charges that they tried to break into a relative's home and then shot at him Saturday morning.

Luigi Jackson told police that two relatives, Charles Gilchrist Jr. and Veronica Gilchrist, came to his home at 2214 S. Church St. shortly before 8 a.m. They carried a pump shotgun and tried to force their way in, police said.

Jackson struggled with them in the front yard, then ran away as the shotgun fell to the ground. Police said that Charles Gilchrist fired two shots at Jackson as he ran toward Key Foods.

No one was injured.

The Gilchrists left in a black SUV, but officers arrested them at their home at 305 Linden Ave, police said.

They were charged with assault with a deadly weapon and placed in the Nash County Jail under separate $1,000 secured bonds.
