Fayetteville police are investigating what they believe to be a road rage-related shootout in the middle of the day.

The shooting happened Monday afternoon on Cliffdale Road near Pritchett Road at a busy intersection that includes Cliffdale Elementary School and a post office.

Police said within the victim's car, there were two adults and a baby in a car seat.

At least one person took video of a man being helped onto an ambulance. A gray Chevrolet Impala was seen with bullet holes on its side.

Antonio Stearns was shot in the shoulder and leg. Chamonnie Riley was also inside the car, but she was not shot. The baby was not hurt.

Police said Stearns returned fire during the ordeal. Stearns is expected to recover from his wounds. Still, people who witnessed the chaos in the aftermath of the incident were shaken up.

"You're just not used to that kind of stuff happening around here," said Tomie Ann Walston, who took video of the scene and spoke with WRAL News. "You hear about things on the outskirts of town, but you don't hear about that going on right here."

Walston said she pulled into a gas station and saw Stearns on the ground with several people standing around him. A woman told Walston that someone had shot at a car and took off.

"I just sort of stared at it in disbelief at first ... for it to happen right here, a block from my house, was kind of surprising," Walston said.

An officer said there was 'a war of words' between both parties before shots were fired.

Police have identified a suspect vehicle, but did not release a vehicle description to WRAL News. There are two people of interest in the case. Police said they're close to making an arrest as of Tuesday afternoon.
