Man charged with murder after senior citizen shot at Durham home
Police charged a man with murder after a senior citizen was shot and killed Tuesday at a Durham home.
On June 6 around 9:30 a.m., officers with the Durham Police Department responded to a crisis call at a home in the 300 block of N. Driver St.
According to police, a man in crisis informed emergency responders that a fight had occurred and another man had been shot.
Joseph Winstead, 78, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. The man who talked to investigators was transported to a local hospital.
Brett Cote, 35, of Durham, was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by felon. He was being held in the Durham County jail with no bond.
An investigation is ongoing, but police believe there is no threat to the public.
Durham police posted on Twitter that Taylor Street between Driver Street and Cherry Grove Street in Durham was closed due to the investigation.
