A Wake County man was killed and two women were hospitalized after their car crashed into a pole supporting a road sign along U.S. Highway 401 in north Raleigh late Saturday.

Police said that a car was traveling at a high rate of speed on U.S. 401 North, near Interstate 540, around 10:30 p.m. The car crossed into southbound lanes and crashed into a pole supporting road signs for the highways.

The driver, 22-year-old Louis Canino, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Two 20-year-old female passengers were transported to WakeMed. Police said Sunday that Corine Silverberg was in critical condition, and Ashley Waltman was in serious condition.

Both sides of U.S. 401 were closed while crews responded to the wreck.

Investigators worked to reconstruct the wreck Sunday morning to try to determine its cause.
