'He has hurt me deeply': Mom devastated after son killed by wrong way driver

The mother of a man killed by a wrong-way driver is devastated after dealing with her son's sudden death at the age of 36.

Cheston Edwards was driving on U.S. Highway 70 between Pine Level and Princeton early Monday morning when his car was crashed into by a pickup truck going the wrong way.

Edwards' mother, Mary Edwards, said he was a hard worker who was determined to be good father to his 9-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter.

“He loved his family, he loved me. He was a person who had deep love," she said.

Cheston Edwards was driving home to Kinston from his girlfriend's house in Raleigh at the time of the crash. They were talking on the phone, Mary Edwards said.

“She said the phone just cut off while they were talking. She thought maybe he just went through a bad area."

Rolbin Pacheco, 35, was charged with driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle.

The pickup's driver, Rolbin Pacheco, 35, of Smithfield, wasn't hurt in the crash, which happened near Braswell Road. Pacheco was charged with driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle.

"He needs to know that he has hurt me, deeply," Mary Edwards said of Pacheco. "He's taken something from me that he shouldn't have taken."

He was being held at the Johnston County jail on $1 million bond.

Mary Edwards is leaning on her faith. “I loved my son and my son loved me," she said. "I will see him again. I will see him again.”
