Fayetteville police said 31-year-old Emmanuel Smith died Saturday in a quadruple shooting.

The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Smith Recreation Center on Slater Avenue, right across the street from Fayetteville State University. Police said a crowd was gathered in the parking lot when shots rang out.

WRAL News was told the shooting was not related to the university's weekend homecoming festivities.

When police arrived at the scene Saturday, four people were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with gunshot wounds. Smith died at the hospital.

Two of the other victims were treated and released, but the fourth person, a woman, remains in the hospital. WRAL News is working to learn her condition.

In August in the same parking lot, shots rang out and a car ended up in the recreation center's swimming pool during a Stop the Violence balloon release for Lorenzo McLaughlin, Jr.

McLaughlin was shot and killed July 29 near the intersection of Stanberry Street and Primrose Drive. Devonte McClain and his brother, Adrian McClain, are charged with his murder.

The area near Fayetteville State University is one city leaders have vowed to improve.

"We're going to put full concentration of the city government to take out the bad actors to make sure those people are held accountable for their actions," said Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin. "But at the end of the day, this is a wonderful community that is ready to embrace the change."

Investigators are working to learning if the incident in August and the most recent are connected.

Police say this is an active investigation. No information about a suspect is available at this time.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Detective T. Kiger at 910-705-6527.
