A Lee County Sheriff's deputy was shot Friday night on Post Office Road in Sanford while responding to a call about a man who was publicly intoxicated, officials said.

As police approached Jeremy Shane Gentry, 27, from Cameron, he removed a concealed handgun and shot the deputy's body camera, officials said. The bullet passed through the camera and was lodged in the bullet proof vest the deputy was wearing.

The deputy was treated at a local hospital and released shortly after.

Gentry was taken into custody and charged with attempted first-degree murder, three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and several drug charges.
