Man hit trying to catch CAT bus

A 19-year-old Raleigh man was struck by a van while trying to cross Capital Boulevard Tuesday morning to catch a bus, police said.

Rayshawn Lee Cooper was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening at WakeMed.

Cooper stepped onto a southbound Capital Area Transit bus at a stop south of New Hope Church Road shortly after 9 a.m. to ask the drover if he had the right bus to get to his destination, police said. The driver informed him that he needed a northbound bus, which was approaching a stop on the other side of the street, police said.

Cooper then hopped off and crossed in front of the bus into traffic to try to catch the northbound bus, police said.

He was hit by a van driven by Andy Thien Tran, 48, of Raleigh.

The incident blocked three of four southbound lanes of traffic on Capital Boulevard for a while Tuesday morning, backing traffic up for miles.

Police said they don't expect any charges will be filed in the case.
